Throughout my journey in animism and totemism, I have been both fascinated and inspired by the artwork known as Powhatan’s Mantle. Originally done on Deer skin with shell beadwork (early 1600s) it holds a powerful imagery of our ancestors connection with the animal kingdom, and our ability for great achievement and advancement still in harmony with our environment. The mantle itself, although becoming a gift, in my heart represents a stand for sovereignty. This rendition is done with oil paint on a handcrafted 20″ Bison skin hand drum.
Photo of Powhatan’s Mantle housed at the Ashmolean Musuem in Oxford is also pictured.
